AI website builder vs hiring a freelancer: an honest comparison
A good freelancer brings judgment, experience and a working relationship. An AI studio brings a fixed price and a finished first version after minutes of build time. Neither is right for everything, so here is how they compare, including where a freelancer clearly wins.
Side by side
| VAI Company | A freelance developer | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $49 for a website, $99 for a mobile app, fixed before you pay | Set by the freelancer, hourly or per project; varies widely with experience and location |
| Time to a first version | The build runs in minutes; the rest is your review time | Usually days to weeks, depending on their schedule and the scope |
| Seeing it before paying | A free mockup preview made from your brief | Portfolio and proposal; some share designs before a deposit |
| Changes | 3 revision rounds included, then $9 each | As agreed in the contract; extra work is usually billed |
| Source code | Yours to download from day one | Depends on the contract; make sure it assigns the code and design to you |
| Advice and judgment | Follows your brief; tells you before you pay if it's out of range | Can challenge the brief, suggest better approaches and know your market |
| Integrations, existing systems, regulated data | Not a fit | Yes, with the right person |
| Ongoing support | Revision rounds and optional hosting; no retainer | Often available as a maintenance arrangement |
When a freelancer is the better choice
- You need the site to connect to other systems: a booking platform, a CRM, payments, a stock list.
- You have an existing site or codebase that needs changing rather than replacing.
- You handle regulated data, such as health or financial records.
- You want someone to think through strategy, content and search visibility with you.
- You want one person to look after the site over the years.
When the AI studio is the better choice
- You need a new site or a first version of an app, and you need it soon.
- Your budget is small and you want the price fixed before anything starts.
- You want to test an idea before you invest in a bigger build.
- You'd like to see a mockup of your own project before you commit.
- You want the full source code with no strings attached.
Or use both
The source you download is a normal project, not something locked to our platform. You can start with a studio build to get a working first version, then hire a freelancer to extend it: a content editor, an integration, or App Store submission for a mobile app. You pay a person for the part that needs a person.
Questions to ask any freelancer
Whoever you hire, these five questions are worth asking up front:
- Is the price fixed or hourly, and what exactly does it include?
- How many rounds of changes are included, and what do more cost?
- Who owns the code, the design and the domain when the work is done?
- Where will the site be hosted, and who pays for it?
- What happens to the work if we stop working together?
The same questions apply to us, and the answers are on the pricing page and in the refund policy.
Questions
Is an AI-built website as good as a freelancer's?
For a straightforward new site, you get a working first version, and you can judge the direction from the free preview before paying. A skilled freelancer will do better on anything that needs judgment about your market, custom functionality or connections to other systems.
Who owns the code?
With VAI Company, you do: the full source is yours to download, change and host anywhere. With a freelancer, it depends on your contract, so ask for a written assignment of the code and design to you.
Can a freelancer work on code VAI Company built?
Yes. Websites are plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and mobile apps are standard Expo projects, so any web or React Native developer can pick them up.
